Maria Victoria Moreno

My Full name is Maria Victoria Moreno Saavedra. I am Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra’s niece, and I am not kidding, that’s the way my uncle is named.. however, of course he is not the well-known writer… I was born somewhere in this world, some day in the history. Anyhow, I am an English teacher, or at least I intend to be so.. I have studied so many things when I was younger that actually I took none of them seriusly. I studied painting, dancing, theatre, however my father wanted me to become a musician.. That is the reason why I play the flute.. I used to play the flute in the Symphony Orchestra of Miranda.. and with the “ensamble de flautas de Jose Antonio Naranjo” as well as with the orquesta tipica del IPC and with an alternative music group called “Slam Ballet”, but know, sometimes I play by my own. Before entering into this Major (English Teaching) I had to take the long way… Thank to the Ped I have not graduated yet. I had to study first Castellano y Literatura for four semesters and then, finally I am here.. Learning how to teach… I know that this time I will do my best… Because, this is the reason why I came to this world: to teach English.

I remember that day when Professor Nahir gave us the plan for our classes.. The first thing that came to my mind was, “Finally I will learn how to teach grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation.. among others.. ” And now that I am about to finish this course I can say that I was not wrong. Because this class gave the needed tools to manage properly with the interesting task of teaching English as a Foreing language. Before taking this course, I knew that this is one of the most important subjects in this major. In my case, I really had no idea of how to cover all the skills in a classroom, but just after this course I learnt how to become creative  (when I designed my microclasses). This was possible not only because of the course, but also, owing to the creativity of my classmates who I think will become excellent teachers..

ELT has given me the oportunity to practice the rol as a teacher, however, as I mentioned before in my previous comment is that I need more experience in order to manage properly with all the requirements in a classroom…. I know that life will give me that oportunity..

To anyone who read this, specially those future teachers:

Most of us maybe at the beginning of the career thought that teaching is an easy task to carry out.. However, throughout our development as teachers we realize that this is not necessarily true. There are many things we have to take into account. One of them, and the most important is the life of each of our students. Did you know that we have their lives  in our hands?. Most of my teachers had my life in their hands, believe it or not.

In my experience not only as a teacher but also as a student I have noticed how a teacher can influence sudents. Some of my best teachers (which I won’t mention here) have taught me not only the academic issues related to my major; but also how to deal wisely in life. This is what I call a real teacher: the one that not only handles perfectly the methodology to teach a certain subject, but also models how to handle the mishaps in life. However, how can someone become a perfect model?, unfortunately I haven’t found the answer to that question. Maybe it is years of experience not only as a teacher but also as a humane being.

Teaching definitely is not an easy task that anyone can carry out. This is a discipline that requires dedication as well as experience, patience and above all, tolerance.. I hope I will become an excellent teacher..
